Born on February 3, 1824, in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, Sigel immigrated to the United States in 1852, seeking political asylum from the repressive European regime. He arrived in New York City with little more than his military experience and a burning desire to contribute to his new homeland. Sigel's military career in America began in earnest when he joined the Union Army during the American Civil War. He quickly rose through the ranks, earning the respect of his comrades and superiors for his strategic acumen and unwavering dedication. In 1862, he was appointed as a Major-General, becoming the highest-ranking German-born officer in the Union Army.
