Born in Nice, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, Garibaldi rose to prominence as a military leader in South America, where he fought for the independence of Uruguay and Brazil. Returning to Europe in the 1850s, Garibaldi became a symbol of Italian nationalism and led a series of military campaigns to unify the various Italian states into a single nation.
