EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the iconic figure of Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), the Italian freedom fighter and revolutionary who played a pivotal role in the Italian Risorgimento, or the Italian Unification. Born in Nice, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, Garibaldi rose to prominence as a military leader in South America, where he fought for the independence of Uruguay and Brazil. Returning to Europe in the 1850s, Garibaldi became a symbol of Italian nationalism and led a series of military campaigns to unify the various Italian states into a single nation. Dressed in his distinctive red shirt and black trousers, the uniform of the "Thousand," the volunteer army he led in the Expedition of the Thousand, Garibaldi is depicted here with an unyielding gaze and a firm resolve. The engraving, created by Metzmacher in the 1870s, captures the essence of Garibaldi's legendary status as a national hero. The Risorgimento was a critical period in Italian history, and Garibaldi's leadership and bravery inspired a sense of unity and pride among the Italian people. This powerful image serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of this remarkable figure, whose influence continues to be felt in Italian culture and history.
