EDITORS COMMENTS
Miss Gertrude Bell: The Uncrowned Queen of Mesopotamia, as depicted in the Illustrated London News on the eve of the Cairo Conference in 1921. Gertrude Bell (1868-1926) was a British writer, archaeologist, and political officer who played a significant role in the administration of Mesopotamia, now modern-day Iraq, following the end of World War I. In this photograph, Bell is seen in her official capacity as a Staff Political Officer, dressed in traditional Arab attire, which she wore to gain the trust and respect of the local population. The Cairo Conference, held from November 22 to 29, 1921, was a critical meeting where the future of Mesopotamia was discussed. The conference was attended by prominent British and French officials, including Winston Churchill, who sought to establish a stable political framework for the region. Bell, who had extensive knowledge of the region and its people, was a valuable advisor to the British delegation. Her expertise in Arab culture, language, and history proved invaluable in navigating the complex political landscape of the Middle East. Bell's influence extended beyond her role as a political officer. She was an accomplished writer and author, having published several books on archaeology and travel in the Middle East. Her works provided valuable insights into the region's history and culture, making her a respected authority on the subject. Bell's contributions to the administration of Mesopotamia and her extensive knowledge of the region earned her the moniker 'The Uncrowned Queen of Mesopotamia.' This photograph captures a pivotal moment in Bell's career, as she prepared to participate in the Cairo Conference and shape the future of Iraq.
