The Bystander magazine, part of the Illustrated London News archive at Mary Evans Picture Library, was a weekly illustrated magazine which ran from 1903 to 1940, when it merged with The Tatler. It covered sport, politics, society, royalty, fashion, motoring, travel and general gossip and was well-known for its rich tradition of illustration and humorous cartoons. Particularly well-known were the cartoons of Captain Bruce Bairnsfather who found fame during the First World War with his cartoons featuring his curmudgeonly soldier character, Ole Bill. The masthead on this particular issue of The Bystander is drawn by Bairnsfather and shows officers reading the magazine around a table. Date: c.1917
