EDITORS COMMENTS
In the early 20th century, the phenomenon of spiritualism and mediumship captivated the public's imagination, leading to both awe and skepticism. Among those who sought to unravel the mysteries of mediumship was renowned investigator Harry Price, who dedicated years of his life to studying and exposing fraudulent practices. Two of his most notable investigations involved the mediums Helen Duncan and Ms Esson Maule. This collection of photographs offers a glimpse into Price's investigations, featuring images of both mediums and evidence of their alleged supernatural abilities. The first photograph shows Helen Duncan, a Scottish medium who gained notoriety for her levitation and materialization seances. Price attended one of her seances in Edinburgh in 1934, where he and his team documented her alleged levitation and other phenomena. However, Price soon uncovered evidence of fraud, including the use of a double and hidden wires to manipulate objects during the seance. The second photograph in this collection is an x-ray of Helen Duncan's skull, taken after her arrest in 1936 for practicing witchcraft and attempting to cause bodily harm to Price. The image reveals no abnormalities, further debunking her claims of supernatural abilities. The third photograph features Ms Esson Maule, who was also involved in the exposure of Helen Duncan's seances. Maule, who had previously worked as a maid for Duncan, testified against her and provided crucial evidence in the case. The photograph shows Maule holding a materialized hand, which was later revealed to be a fake. Price's investigations into the mediumship of Helen Duncan and Ms Esson Maule are a testament to his dedication to uncovering the truth behind spiritualist phenomena. These photographs offer a fascinating glimpse into the world of spiritualism and the methods used to expose its frauds.
