EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor depicts the Black-winged Stilt, Himantopus himantopus, in the Large Series plate 62 from the John Reeves Collection of Zoological Drawings from Canton, China. The nineteenth century illustration, created by an unknown artist, captures the intricate details of this long-legged wading bird native to Asia and parts of Europe and the Americas. The Black-winged Stilt is a member of the Charadriiformes order, known for their long, thin legs and bills. In this illustration, the bird is depicted with its distinctive black wings spread wide, contrasting against its white plumage. Its long, thin, red bill is curved at the tip, perfectly suited for probing the muddy depths of shallow waters for food. The artist has also captured the delicate anatomy of the bird's legs, with their long, slender appearance and intricate knee joints. John Reeves (1774-1829) was a British merchant and naturalist who lived in Canton, China, from 1812 to 1820. He amassed an impressive collection of zoological drawings during his time in China, which were later published in London. The collection includes over 1,000 watercolors of birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish. This particular illustration of the Black-winged Stilt was likely created during the mid-1800s, making it an important historical record of this fascinating species. The artist's attention to detail and use of vibrant colors bring the bird to life, offering a glimpse into the natural world of the past. Today, the Black-winged Stilt remains an iconic species, known for its distinctive appearance and agile movements in the wetlands of various continents.
