This exquisite 19th century artwork, created by the renowned naturalist and artist Richard Bowdler Sharpe, captures the bird in mid-flight, its long, curved bill pointed towards a vibrant, flowering angiosperm. The hummingbird's elongated tail feathers are spread out in a V-shape, creating an elegant contrast against its green body and iridescent wings. The scissor-tailed hummingbird is a native of Central and South America, and is named for its distinctive, forked tail.
