Vedrines is depicted here in mid-flight, wearing goggles and a leather helmet, as he skillfully navigates his Morane-Borel monoplane through the open sky. Born on February 18, 1881, in Paris, France, Vedrines was a man of great ambition and courage. He began his aviation career in 1909, learning to fly under the tutelage of aviation pioneer Louis Blériot. By 1911, Vedrines had honed his skills and was ready to take on the challenge of the Paris to Madrid Air Race. The race, which covered a distance of approximately 1,100 kilometers (683 miles), attracted a field of 27 contestants. Vedrines' determination and skill paid off, as he completed the race in just over 14 hours, making him the first person to fly non-stop from Paris to Madrid. His victory was a testament to the progress being made in aviation technology and the courage and determination of early aviators.
