EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolor and pencil drawing by Richard Dunscombe Parker depicts a pair of Little Auks (Alle alle) in their vibrant plumage. The male, with its distinctive red bill and legs, stands proudly on a rocky outcropping, gazing out to sea. The female, with her brownish-gray bill and legs, rests nearby, her feathers a stunning blend of black, white, and gray. Little Auks, also known as Dovekies, are small seabirds native to the North Atlantic Ocean. They are excellent swimmers and divers, able to plunge into the water from great heights to catch fish. This drawing beautifully captures the dynamic contrast between their aquatic lifestyle and their terrestrial resting habits. Richard Dunscombe Parker (1805-1881) was an Irish natural history artist and illustrator. His work was published in various scientific journals and ornithological publications of the time. This particular drawing, with its intricate details and lifelike representation, showcases Parker's exceptional talent and dedication to the natural world. The medium of the artwork is watercolor and gum on paper. The use of gum, a traditional adhesive, may have been employed to create texture or to fix the watercolor to the paper. This drawing is not only a testament to Parker's artistic abilities but also a valuable historical record of these fascinating birds.
