NFS (London Region) narrow boat fitted with fire pumps

There were 18 river fire stations along the length of the River Thames during WW2. They were used to accommodate the crews on a 24 hour standby to operate the fireboats. In addition the three permanent London Fire Brigade fireboats, including the Massey Shaw, other fireboats and craft were brought into service. Here narrow boats (known locally in London as monkey boats) were equipped with trailer pumps in order to access, and provide water supplies from, the canals that ran north of the River Thames

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a narrow boat from the National Fire Service (NFS) London Region, fitted with fire pumps, moored along the River Thames during World War II. The London Fire Brigade played a crucial role in protecting the city from fire threats during this period, with 18 river fire stations established along the length of the Thames. In addition to the three permanent fireboats, other craft, including narrow boats like this one, were brought into service. Known locally as 'monkey boats,' these narrow craft were equipped with trailer pumps to access and provide water supplies from the canals that ran north of the River Thames. The NFS and London Fire Brigade worked in close collaboration to ensure a constant 24-hour standby, ready to respond to any fire emergency. This image, taken in 1942, offers a glimpse into the wartime firefighting efforts on the River Thames and its connected waterways. The 1940s were a critical period in the history of firefighting in London, with innovative solutions like the use of narrow boats with fire pumps demonstrating the adaptability and resourcefulness of the fire services during times of conflict.
