De Long's groundbreaking exploration aimed to prove that the Arctic Sea ice was not stationary, but rather moved by ocean currents. Miraculously, the crew survived and managed to make their way to the abandoned Russian settlement of Wrangel Island. There, they discovered the remains of the 1847 expedition led by Eliseyev and Krasilnikov.
