EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Madagascar Kingfisher, Alcedo vintsioides, and an unidentified Australian Kingfisher. The intricately detailed illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie," published in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830. The work was directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, with engravings by Coutant and paintings by Jean Gabriel Pretre. Pretre was a renowned painter of natural history, having served as an artist at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Madagascar Kingfisher, native to the eastern coast of Madagascar, is depicted perched on a branch with its vibrant blue and green plumage on full display. The unidentified Australian Kingfisher, with its cerulean blue and white feathers, adds an intriguing element to the image, highlighting the extensive exploration and documentation of the natural world during this period. The intricate stipple engraving technique used in this print allowed for the creation of fine details and textures, resulting in a visually striking and accurate representation of the birds. The background of the print is adorned with various other birds, adding to the overall beauty and educational value of the work. This historical piece is a testament to the dedication and passion of naturalists and artists during the 19th century in documenting the natural world for future generations.
