EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie de Medici (1575-1642): A Portrait of Power and Wealth as Queen of France Marie de Medici, born in Florence, Italy, in 1575, was a woman of remarkable intelligence, beauty, and ambition. She became the second wife of King Henry IV of France, of the House of Bourbon, in 1600, at the age of 25. This engraving from a painting by F. Porbus, published in Historia Universal in 1885, captures the essence of Marie's regal presence and the power she wielded as queen. Marie's marriage to Henry IV was a strategic alliance between the powerful Medici family of Italy and the French monarchy. The engraving shows Marie wearing a gorget, a type of neck armor, symbolizing her military and political influence. Her elegant attire, adorned with pearls and other precious jewels, reflects her wealth and status. Marie's influence over her husband was significant, and she played a crucial role in French politics during his reign. She was an active patron of the arts and sciences, and her court was renowned for its cultural achievements. After Henry IV's assassination in 1610, Marie became regent for her young son, Louis XIII, and continued to exercise power behind the scenes until she was ousted in 1617. This portrait of Marie de Medici as Queen of France is a testament to her powerful and influential role in French history. Her legacy as a patron of the arts, a political strategist, and a wealthy queen endures to this day.
