EDITORS COMMENTS
In this colorful engraving from the 19th century, we find a humorous depiction of the famous German reformer, Martin Luther (1483-1546), and his wife Katharina von Bora (1499-1552). Luther, dressed as a monk with a quill in hand, sits at a table covered in papers, deep in thought. His wife, Katharina, stands behind him, playfully pulling on his robe and giving him a disapproving look. Born in 1483 in Eisleben, Germany, Martin Luther was a theologian, priest, and professor of theology who became a central figure in the Protestant Reformation. In 1517, he published his Ninety-five Theses, which criticized the sale of indulgences and sparked a theological debate that would ultimately lead to the formation of the Lutheran Church. Katharina von Bora, born in 1499 in Nimbschen, Germany, was a nun when she escaped from her convent in 1523 and married Luther in 1525. Their union was a significant departure from the celibate lifestyle expected of religious leaders at the time. Together, they had six children and provided a home and family life for Luther, who had previously lived a solitary existence. This caricature, created in France in 1881, pokes fun at the contrast between Luther's monastic past and his domestic present. The image of Luther's wife playfully pulling on his robe and giving him a disapproving look may also reflect the tensions between the Catholic and Protestant faiths at the time, with some critics mocking the idea of a reformer leading a family life. Despite the lighthearted tone of this engraving, it serves as a reminder of the significant role that Katharina von Bora played in Martin Luther's life and the history of the Protestant Reformation.
