EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures four prominent British military figures of the early 19th century, Sir Thomas Graham, 1st Baron Lynedoch (1748-1843), Lord William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland and 6th Marquis of Anglesey, 1st Baron Anglesey of Methuen (1768-1857), and Sir Thomas Picton (1758-1815), assembled in their resplendent uniforms. The photograph, taken in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, showcases the grandeur and intricacy of British military dress during this period. Sir Thomas Graham, a Scottish soldier and statesman, served as a Lieutenant-General in the Peninsular War and was later appointed Governor-General of Canada. He is depicted here in the uniform of a full General, adorned with gold braid, a crimson coat, and a tricorn hat. Lord Hill, born William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, was a British Army officer who rose to the rank of Field Marshal. He is seen in the uniform of a full General, complete with a bearskin hat, gold braid, and a crimson coat. Sir Thomas Picton, a Welsh soldier and politician, was a Major-General in the British Army and played a significant role in the Peninsular War. He is shown in the uniform of a Major-General, featuring a blue coat, gold lace, and a shako hat. The Marquis of Anglesey, born Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, is best known for his victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo. Although not present in the image, Anglesey served as Wellington's Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in India during the Anglo-Maratha Wars. He is depicted here in the uniform of a Field Marshal, with a gold-embroidered coat, a bearskin hat, and a sash bearing the Order of the Garter. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the British military uniforms of the early 19th century, a time when these men played crucial roles in shaping the course of history.
