Mlle Lefevre as Prascovia in L'Etoile du Nord

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating handcolored lithograph depicting the renowned French actress and singer, Constance-Caroline Lefebvre, in the title role of the opera "L'Etoile du Nord" (The Star of the North) at the Opera Comique in Paris. The image, created by the skilled hand of Alexandre Lacauchie for Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Theatres de Paris in 1853, offers a glimpse into the rich history of French theatre and the extraordinary talent of Mlle Lefebvre. Born on March 22, 1828, in Paris, Constance-Caroline Lefebvre made her theatrical debut in 1844 at the Théâtre-Lyrique. Her exceptional vocal abilities and captivating stage presence quickly drew the attention of critics and audiences alike. By the late 1840s, she had transitioned to the operatic stage, where she continued to dazzle audiences with her powerful voice and dramatic performances. In "L'Etoile du Nord," Mlle Lefebvre portrayed the character of Prascovia, a peasant girl who falls in love with a nobleman, Alphonse, despite the objections of her father. The opera, with a libretto by Eugène Scribe and music by Adolphe Adam, premiered at the Opéra-Comique on January 15, 1853, and was an instant success. This evocative lithograph captures the essence of Mlle Lefebvre's portrayal of Prascovia, with her expressive face and flowing costume, as she gazes off into the distance, lost in thought or emotion. The intricate details of her costume, from the delicate lace collar to the richly textured fabric of her gown, are brought to life through the artistry of Lacauchie's hand. This image is a testament to the enduring legacy of Mlle Lefebvre and the golden age of French opera.
