EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil painting depicts the Reverend Thomas Drew, DD (Doctor of Divinity), an influential Irish-born clergyman and theologian of the Church of England, during the 19th century. The Reverend Drew was born in County Down, Northern Ireland, in 1800, and received his education at Trinity College, Dublin, and the University of Cambridge. He was ordained a deacon in 1825 and a priest in 1826, and served various parishes in England before being appointed as the Rector of St. Mary's Church in Haddington, Scotland, in 1837. Drew is best known for his theological works, particularly his contributions to the Anglican doctrine of justification by faith. He authored several influential books, including "The Doctrine of Justification: A Practical Exposition," "The Doctrine of Justification: A Dogmatic Statement," and "The Doctrine of Justification: A Scriptural and Historical Exposition." His writings helped to clarify and strengthen the Anglican position on this important theological issue. Despite his significant theological contributions, Drew's personal life was marked by tragedy. He lost his wife and two of his children at a young age, and his third child became mentally ill. Nevertheless, he continued to serve his parishioners with dedication and compassion. This beautiful oil painting captures the Reverend Drew in his later years, with a serious expression and a calm, contemplative demeanor. The muted colors and intricate details of the painting showcase the skill of the unknown artist who created it. The painting is a testament to the enduring influence of the Reverend Thomas Drew, DD, on Anglican theology and the lives of those he served.
