EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of pride and progress in Belfast's shipbuilding industry as Prince Albert Victor, the Duke of Clarence and Avondale, opens the New Alexandra Graving Dock on June 21, 1889. The Prince, dressed in a formal military uniform, stands at the dockside with a group of dignitaries and shipyard workers, gazing intently at the massive gates of the new graving dock. Graving docks were innovative engineering marvels of the late 19th century, enabling ships to be lifted out of the water for repairs and maintenance. Sealed off with gates, these docks allowed work to be carried out on the hull without the need for the ship to be in the water. The New Alexandra Graving Dock in Belfast was the largest of its kind in the world at the time, measuring 915 feet long and 135 feet wide. The opening ceremony was an important event for the city of Belfast, marking a significant milestone in its maritime history. The dock was built by Harland and Wolff, the renowned shipbuilding company, and was a testament to the city's industrial prowess and ingenuity. The New Alexandra Graving Dock played a crucial role in the construction of some of the most famous ships in history, including the RMS Titanic and the RMS Olympic. This photograph, taken by an ILN (Illustrated London News) photographer, captures the excitement and anticipation of the crowd as they witness the opening of this engineering marvel. The New Alexandra Graving Dock remained in operation until the late 20th century, and its legacy continues to inspire awe and admiration for Belfast's rich maritime history.
