The Ace of Spades road house

Illustration by Mel of The Ace of Spades road-house on the Kingston by-pass, considered the first of its kind. Road-houses sprang up along arterial roads leading out of London, usually in Home Counties areas, and offered a range of entertainment and sporting facilities to patrons at a time when car ownership was increasing. Built in a Tudorbethan style using the timbers of an ancient barn on the site, it offered refreshments at all hours, dancing until 3am courtesy of Percy Chandler and his Band and cabaret. The floodlit swimming pool was warmed to 70 degreeds and there were dressing rooms for up to 120 bathers with a special make-up department for ladies who wanted to dance. There was a sister road-house on the Great West Road near Hounslow in Middlesex. Date: 1933

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the golden era of roadside entertainment with this illustration of The Ace of Spades roadhouse on the Kingston bypass, a pioneering establishment that opened its doors in 1933. As car ownership began to increase in the 1930s, roadhouses became a popular destination along arterial roads leading out of London, particularly in the Home Counties. The Ace of Spades, with its distinctive Tudorbethan design, was built using the timbers of an ancient barn on the site and offered a range of amenities to weary travelers. Patrons could enjoy refreshments at all hours, dance until 3am to the lively tunes of Percy Chandler and his Band, and even take a dip in the floodlit swimming pool, heated to a toasty 70 degrees. With dressing rooms for up to 120 bathers and a special make-up department for ladies who wanted to hit the dance floor, The Ace of Spades was the epitome of luxury and glamour. Situated on the Kingston bypass, this roadhouse was the first of its kind and boasted a sister establishment on the Great West Road near Hounslow in Middlesex. The illustration, dated 1933, captures the essence of an era when the simple pleasure of a night out on the town was a cherished experience. So sit back, relax, and let the nostalgia wash over you as you take in the charm of this bygone era.
