EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Corsi from Giulio Ferrario's seminal work "Il Costume Antico e Moderno" published in Florence in 1843, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of Ancient Etruscan fashion. The image showcases a collection of statues depicting Etruscan men dressed in various garments, providing an intriguing insight into their attire and cultural heritage. In the foreground, we see a figure wearing the traditional Etruscan toga, a large sheet of fabric draped over one shoulder and around the body, held in place by a fibula (a type of brooch). Another man wears a tunic, a fitted garment with sleeves, which is secured at the waist with a belt. Both men are also adorned with calzari, or shoes, adding practicality to their elegant attire. The central figure, dressed as the god Apulu, is depicted with a mirror in hand, suggesting the importance of personal grooming and self-presentation in Etruscan society. Nearby, we find a statue of Apollo, the god of the sun, wearing a more ornate toga, adorned with intricate folds and patterns, reflecting his divine status. The background of the engraving reveals additional figures and scenes, including the mythological tale of Marsyas, a satyr who was punished by Apollo for challenging his musical skills. In this scene, Marsyas is depicted being flayed alive by the god, a grisly reminder of the power and capricious nature of the gods. This engraving offers a unique perspective on Ancient Etruscan fashion and mythology, showcasing the intricacies of their clothing and the rich stories that shaped their culture. The hand-colored technique adds an additional layer of depth and beauty to the already captivating imagery.
