EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming chromolithograph depicts Aylesbury ducks, a breed of domestic duck that originated in the English town of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. The ducks in this image were bred by the renowned poultry fancier, Mrs. Mary Seamons, and went on to win the top prize at the Aylesbury Duck Show in 1870. The illustration was created by J.W. Ludlow and published in Lewis Wright's "The Illustrated Book of Poultry" by Cassell, London, in 1890. The image was later reproduced by Vincent Brooks Day & Son, a prominent Victorian chromolithography firm. During the Victorian era, there was a craze for breeding and exhibiting various types of poultry, including ducks. Aylesbury ducks were particularly prized for their elegant plumage and large, white, table-ready carcasses. In this image, we see a proud and regal Aylesbury duck pair, with the male sporting a distinctive "helmet" of feathers on its head. The female, or hen, is also adorned with vibrant, iridescent feathers. The inclusion of Guinea fowl in the image adds an exotic touch to the scene. Guinea fowl, represented here by the Numida meleagris species, were also popular during this time for their striking appearance and gamey meat. The presence of these birds in the image may suggest that they were kept on the same farm or estate as the Aylesbury ducks. This beautiful and intricately detailed chromolithograph offers a glimpse into the world of Victorian poultry breeding and the ornithological fascination of the era. The image's rich colors and meticulous attention to detail make it a captivating addition to any collection of historical illustrations or poultry-themed art.
