EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a Buff Cochin Hen, a breed of domestic fowl that was a popular addition to Victorian-era poultry collections and exhibitions. The Buff Cochin Hen, scientifically known as Gallus gallus domesticus, is shown in all its exotic glory, with its voluminous plumage and distinctive buff coloring. The image is based on an illustration by J.W. Ludlow, published in Lewis Wright's The Illustrated Book of Poultry in 1890. The print was produced by Vincent Brooks Day & Son, a renowned British chromolithographic firm of the time. During the Victorian era, there was a craze for ornithology and breeding rare and exotic birds, and the Buff Cochin Hen was no exception. This breed, which originated in China, was prized for its unique appearance and impressive size. The Buff Cochin Hen was often compared to the Silver Spangled Hamburgh, another popular breed, and was sometimes confused with the Dutch breeds, such as the Holland, Hoen, or Hamburg. The Buff Cochin Hen was not only admired for its appearance but also for its productivity. It was a dual-purpose bird, providing both meat and eggs. The rooster, or cock, was sometimes used for cockfighting, although this practice was becoming less common in the late 19th century due to growing opposition. The Buff Cochin Hen's popularity continued well into the 20th century, and it remains a beloved breed among poultry enthusiasts today. This print is a testament to the fascination with birds and their diverse plumage that characterized the Victorian era, and serves as a reminder of the rich history of poultry breeding and exhibition.
