EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense and resolute gaze of Edward Montagu, 2nd Earl of Manchester and Lord Kimbolton (1602-1671), a prominent commander of Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War. Montagu, a Puritan and Roundhead, played a significant role in the conflict, particularly in the Eastern Association, which controlled eastern England for the Parliamentarians. His military career began in earnest during the First English Civil War (1642-1646), where he distinguished himself in several battles, including the Battle of Marston Moor (1644), which marked a major victory for the Parliamentarians. Montagu's military prowess and commitment to the Parliamentarian cause earned him the respect and trust of Oliver Cromwell and other leading figures in the Parliamentarian camp. He was appointed as a member of the Council of State, which governed England during the Commonwealth period (1649-1660). Montagu's influence extended beyond the battlefield, as he also served as Lord President of the Council from 1653 to 1658. Despite his dedication to the Parliamentarian cause, Montagu's political allegiances were not always clear-cut. He was a pragmatist who sought to maintain stability and order, and he was known for his ability to navigate the complex political landscape of the time. This portrait, with its solemn expression and formal attire, underscores Montagu's reputation as a capable and determined leader who played a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the English Civil War.
