EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of the 1920s, a decade marked by renewal and reflection after the devastating First World War, a profound pilgrimage took place in the small Belgian town of Ypres. The poignant image on this cover of The Graphic captures an aerial view of the Prince of Wales and an estimated 11,000 pilgrims, making their way back from the Menin Gate. This historic site, which had become a symbol of sacrifice and remembrance, bore the names of over 54,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who had lost their lives in the Ypres Salient during the war. The pilgrimage, which took place on August 24, 1928, was a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of those who had been touched by the horrors of the war. The pilgrims, dressed in their Sunday best, walked in silence, their faces etched with solemnity and respect. The procession, which wound its way through the town, was a poignant reminder of the human cost of the conflict and a tribute to the fallen soldiers. The Menin Gate, which had been completed only a few years earlier, had become a place of pilgrimage for the families of the fallen, as well as for the soldiers who had survived the war. The gate, adorned with the names of the missing, stood as a powerful symbol of hope and remembrance, a testament to the enduring human spirit and the power of collective memory.
