EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Heart Urchin, Spatangus purpureus, also known as Spatango paonazzo. The Heart Urchin is a type of crinoid or sea lily, which is an extinct group of marine animals that lived from the Ordovician Period to the present day. This particular species was once abundant in European waters. The intricately detailed illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his precise and elegant style. The Heart Urchin is named for its distinctive heart-shaped test, or protective covering. Its five arms are adorned with long, slender spines, which helped to protect it from predators. The engraving captures the intricate details of the Heart Urchin's test and spines, as well as the subtle coloration and texture of its surface. The use of the copperplate stipple engraving technique allowed for a high level of detail and tonal variation in the final image. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism, bringing the Heart Urchin to life in a way that a image could not. Today, the Heart Urchin is considered extinct, with no confirmed sightings since the late 1800s. This beautiful illustration serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity of marine life that once existed and the importance of preserving the natural world for future generations.
