EDITORS COMMENTS
Heloise d'Argenteuil, a renowned figure of the Middle Aages, is depicted in this beautiful handcoloured copperplate engraving by Georges Jacques Gatine, based on an illustration by Louis Marie Lante from the Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres. Heloise, born into a noble family around 1093, became famous for her intellectual pursuits and romantic relationship with the philosopher and theologian Peter Abelard. Heloise is shown here in her nun's habit, which includes a long, flowing robe with a belt adorned with an escarcelle, an elaborate purse or almoner's pouch. The escarcelle was used to collect and distribute alms to the poor, reflecting Heloise's charitable nature. Her hair is styled in a simple yet elegant braid, held in place by a hairband. Despite her intellectual accomplishments and her passionate love affair with Abelard, Heloise ultimately chose to dedicate her life to God and became the abbess of the Paraclete monastery in Pontigny, France. Her correspondence with Abelard, which includes letters discussing their love and philosophy, has survived to this day and is a testament to their enduring bond. This engraving captures the essence of Heloise's complex and fascinating life, showcasing her as a scholar, writer, and devoted nun. The intricate details of her costume and the rich colors of the handcolouring add to the image's beauty and historical significance.
