EDITORS COMMENTS
Two Jews at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, 1887: A Moment of Reflection and Devotion The poignant image of two Jews deeply engrossed in prayer at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, captured in 1887, offers a glimpse into the rich history and enduring traditions of the Jewish faith. The Wailing Wall, also known as the Western Wall, is a sacred site of pilgrimage and worship for Jews, located in the Old City of Jerusalem. This ancient limestone wall forms the western support of the Temple Mount and is a poignant reminder of the Second Temple of Jerusalem, which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. The name 'Wailing Wall' derives from the Jewish practice of mourning and weeping at this site over the loss of their temples. The wall's rough, timeworn surface bears testament to the countless prayers and tears that have been left upon it over the centuries. The two Jews in this photograph, with their heads bowed and eyes closed, embody the deep connection and reverence that Jews have for this sacred place. The pilgrimage to the Wailing Wall is a profoundly moving experience for Jews, as they come to pay their respects, seek guidance, and offer their prayers to the Almighty. The image of the two Jews in prayer serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring faith and resilience of the Jewish people, who have maintained their connection to their ancient traditions and heritage despite the many challenges they have faced throughout history.
