EDITORS COMMENTS
King William Rufus, also known as 'The Red King' (1087-1100), is depicted in this evocative 12th-century illustration during his fateful hunting trip in the New Forest. With his trusted companion, Walter Tyrel, by his side, the monarch eagerly scans the forest for signs of game, his expression one of intense focus and determination. As the king draws back his bow, poised to take a shot at a magnificent stag, he misses his mark. Frustrated, he cries out to Walter for assistance. In an instant, Walter, also mounted on horseback, releases his own arrow in response to the king's call. However, the arrow takes an unfortunate turn, striking King William Rufus in the eye instead. The tragic event unfolds before our eyes as the king, in disbelief, falls from his horse, his face contorted in pain. The forest, once filled with the sounds of laughter and camaraderie, is now silent, save for the distant echoes of the huntsmen's cries. The accidental death of King William Rufus on this day in 1100 marked the end of an era. The young monarch, who had only ruled for thirteen years, was succeeded by his brother, Henry I. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the fleeting nature of power.
