EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored lithograph, we find the young and dashing Louis, Duke of Burgundy and Petit Dauphin of France, depicted in the height of 17th-century elegance. The image, created as part of Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France" series, is a masterful reproduction of an original print by Bonnard. Louis, born in 1682, was the eldest son of Philippe, Duke of Orléans, and his wife, Princess Henrietta Anna of England. He was known as Petit Dauphin, as he was the heir to the throne of France after the death of King Louis XIV's grandson, the Dauphin, in 1711. The title Duke of Burgundy was bestowed upon him in 1696. In the photograph, the Duke is shown wearing an elaborate costume of the period. He is dressed in a richly embroidered red velvet doublet, adorned with gold lace and silver buttons. A white linen shirt with a frilled collar peeks out from underneath, adding a touch of contrast to the overall ensemble. A black velvet cape, fastened with a golden clasp, is draped over his shoulders, while a three-cornered hat sits atop his head, its brim adorned with a black ribbon. The Duke's posture is confident and regal, his gaze steady and unwavering. The intricate details of his attire, from the delicate lacework to the rich fabrics, are beautifully rendered in the lithograph, making for a stunning visual representation of the opulence and grandeur of the French court during the late 17th century. This image of Louis, Duke of Burgundy and Petit Dauphin, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of elegance, luxury, and royalty. It serves as a testament to the enduring allure of historical fashion and the artistry of the lithographic process.
