EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts a pivotal moment in Islamic history, the Mahomet and Spider Myth. Mahomet, the prophet of Islam, is shown hiding in a cave with the entrance guarded by a protective spider and her intricate web. The Koreishites, Mahomet's persecutors from Mecca, are passing by, unaware of his presence. The story of Mahomet and the spider is deeply rooted in Islamic tradition and is believed to have occurred during the Prophet's flight from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. According to the myth, as Mahomet and his companions approached the cave, they were confronted by a spider spinning a web across the entrance. Rather than disturbing the spider, they decided to wait until she had finished her work. As they waited, they were amazed to see the spider rebuilding her web every time it was destroyed by the wind. The Koreishites, who were hot on Mahomet's trail, eventually passed by the cave, failing to notice the Prophet and his companions hiding inside. The spider's protective presence allowed them to remain undetected, ensuring their safety and enabling Mahomet to continue spreading the message of Islam. This myth has been passed down through generations and serves as a reminder of the power and resilience of nature and the importance of patience and perseverance in the face of adversity. The image captures the essence of this myth, with Mahomet and his companions blending into the natural surroundings, hidden from their enemies, and the spider standing guard, weaving her intricate web.
