EDITORS COMMENTS
Perseus, the legendary Greek hero, is depicted in this stunning copperplate engraving by Tommaso Piroli from his Antiquities of Herculaneum, published in Rome in 1790. The hero is shown in the midst of rescuing the princess Andromeda from the clutches of the monstrous sea creature, Cetus. Andromeda, bound to a rock as a sacrifice to appease the wrath of the sea god Poseidon, is seen looking up at Perseus with a mixture of fear and relief. Perseus, clad in a tunic and chiton, is shown carrying out the daring rescue with great determination. On his shoulders, he wears the miraculous helmet of Hades, which made him invisible, ensuring his safety from the creature's sight. In one hand, he holds his sword, Harpe, which he used to behead Medusa, the Gorgon whose petrifying gaze had turned the heads of many into stone. Under his cloak, the severed head of Medusa is visible, a testament to Perseus' bravery. The vignette below the image shows a series of human heads, sacrifices to the god Bacchus, the deity of wine, fertility, and revelry. The heads, with their varied expressions, add a sense of depth and intrigue to the image, further emphasizing the richness and complexity of the classical world. This engraving is a beautiful representation of one of the most famous mythological tales, showcasing Perseus' courage, resourcefulness, and strength. It is a testament to the enduring power of mythology and the human imagination.
