EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Flavius Iustinus, better known as Emperor Justin I, the Eastern Roman Emperor or Byzantine Emperor, who ruled from 518 to 527 AD. The image is taken from the 17th-century publication "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy) by Francois Salma, published in Utrecht. The portrait was produced as a copperplate engraving by Abraham Bogaerts. Justin I was born in Illyricum, in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, around 450 AD. He rose to power through a series of political maneuvers and military campaigns, eventually becoming the emperor in 518 AD. Justin I is often overshadowed by his nephew and successor, the famous Emperor Justinian I, but he played a crucial role in setting the stage for Justinian's reign. Justin I is shown here wearing the imperial diadem and a cloak, with a medallion bearing his image suspended from the diadem. The inscription on the medallion reads "Iustinianus Augustus," indicating his imperial title. The emperor is also depicted holding a scepter and an orb, symbols of his power and authority. The portrait is surrounded by the portraits of three important figures from Justin I's court: Petrus Sabbatius, who served as the emperor's praetorian prefect; Petrus, who was a high-ranking military official; and Iustinianus, who was a nephew and potential heir to the throne. This portrait is a valuable historical document, providing a glimpse into the appearance and regalia of a Roman emperor during the late antique period. It also offers insights into the artistic styles and techniques of the 17th century, as reflected in the copperplate engraving process used by Abraham Bogaerts.
