EDITORS COMMENTS
In this illustration from the 1932 publication "Prehistoric Life" by Wilhelm Bolsche, we are presented with a complete skeleton of the extinct Rhamphorhynchus genus of pterosaur. This long-tailed flying reptile, a member of the Pterodactyloidea family, is depicted with its wings outstretched, revealing a wingspan estimated to be around nine meters. The Rhamphorhynchus is believed to have lived during the late Cretaceous period, approximately 125 to 90 million years ago. The skeleton is illustrated in a marine environment, suggesting that this creature was adapted to life in the sea. Its elongated tail and paddle-like limbs indicate that it was a strong swimmer, capable of navigating the ocean currents with ease. The Rhamphorhynchus is also notable for its large, pointed head and elongated snout, which housed a series of sharp teeth. Some fossil evidence suggests that this pterosaur may have used its elongated snout to snatch fish from the water. The discovery of the Rhamphorhynchus and other marine pterosaurs challenges the long-held belief that dinosaurs were the only dominant creatures of the Mesozoic Era. This illustration, created by the skilled hand of Hugo Wolff, Maage, and W. Bolsche, provides a fascinating glimpse into the prehistoric world and the diverse range of creatures that once inhabited our planet. The Rhamphorhynchus, with its unique combination of features, continues to captivate the imagination of scientists and enthusiasts alike, offering a window into the rich tapestry of prehistory and the wonders of zoology and paleontology. This illustration is part of the extensive collection of historical scientific images available through Mary Evans Picture Library, providing a valuable resource for researchers, educators, and anyone with an interest in the natural world and the history of science.
