EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon" published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838, showcases an intriguing assembly of five distinct cetacean species and one river dolphin. The central figure is the Sowerby's beaked whale (Mesoplodon bidens), a deep-diving marine mammal with a long, slender body and distinctive beak. To the left, the Beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas), also known as the white whale, is depicted with its distinctive rounded melon and white coloration. Adjacent to the Beluga whale is the South Asian river dolphin (Platanista gangetica), an endangered species native to the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. The South Asian river dolphin, also known as the Susu or Soosoo, is easily identified by its long, curved snout and lack of a dorsal fin. To the right of the Sowerby's beaked whale, there are two additional beaked whale species: the Aodon's beaked whale (Mesoplodon aodon) and the Dale's beaked whale (Mesoplodon dalii). Both of these species are characterized by their long, slender bodies and beaked snouts, with the Aodon's beaked whale having a more pointed head and the Dale's beaked whale having a more rounded head. The inclusion of these five beaked whale species and the South Asian river dolphin in this illustration highlights the vast diversity of the cetacean family and the intricate details that can be observed through careful observation and documentation. This beautiful and historically significant engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these magnificent creatures and their habitats for future generations to appreciate and study.
