EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate print depicts the magnificent Tomb of Hyder Ali Khan, Sultan of Mysore, India. Hyder Ali (1722-1782), also known as Hayder Ali, was a powerful and influential ruler who reigned over the Kingdom of Mysore from 1761 until his death. He is remembered for his military prowess and his efforts to expand the territories of his kingdom. The Tomb, located in Seringapatam, is a stunning example of Indo-Islamic architecture. The central dome, adorned with intricate geometric patterns and calligraphy, dominates the structure. The tomb complex also includes several smaller domes, ornamental arches, and a mosque. Andrea Bernieri, an Italian artist, created this illustration as part of Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, Italy, in 1844. Bernieri's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the depiction of the tomb's intricate architectural features and the lush vegetation surrounding it. The use of handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the print, making it a beautiful and intriguing representation of this historical site. Hyder Ali Khan's Tomb is an enduring symbol of the rich cultural heritage of India and the complex history of the Mysore Kingdom. It continues to attract visitors from around the world who are drawn to its architectural beauty and historical significance.
