U. S. Troops depart for Mexico 1914

A line of US soldiers in uniform and full kit march onto a ship, surrounded by wooden boxes full of supplies and weapons, en route to Mexico. This was to stop a German merchant ship, Ypiranga, from delivering weapons to Huerta, and resulted in small skirmishes at Veracruz. The Ypiranga delivered the weapons at a different port and the US retreated, adding more tension to Mexican-American relations.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment in 1914 when a line of United States soldiers in full uniform and kit march determinedly towards a waiting ship, surrounded by wooden crates filled with supplies and weapons. The scene unfolds against the backdrop of a restless sea, as the soldiers prepare to embark on a mission to Mexico. The United States had intervened in the Mexican Revolution, with President Woodrow Wilson ordering the deployment of troops to stop a German merchant ship, the Ypiranga, from delivering weapons to the Mexican dictator Victoriano Huerta. The Ypiranga, however, managed to deliver its cargo at a different port, and the resulting small skirmishes at Veracruz added more tension to already strained Mexican-American relations. The soldiers in the photograph appear focused and resolute, their faces set with determination as they prepare to leave American shores. The wooden crates and weapons that surround them are a testament to the logistical effort required to support a military intervention. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complex geopolitical dynamics at play during this period, and the role that the United States played in shaping the outcome of the Mexican Revolution. The photograph is a powerful visual representation of a pivotal moment in history, and offers a glimpse into the human stories and larger historical narrative that underpin the events of 1914. This image, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, is a valuable resource for scholars, educators, and anyone interested in exploring the rich and complex history of the early 20th century.
