EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled 'Village scene near Kupang, Timor, 19th century,' transports us back in time to a quaint and idyllic village setting in the eastern Indonesian province of Timor. The image, created by Italian artist Corsi after Alphonse Pellion, was published in Giulio Ferrario's renowned work, 'Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World,' in 1834. In this tranquil scene, we observe a group of Timorese men, dressed in traditional attire, busily harvesting coconuts from the tall palms that dominate the landscape. The men, some perched atop the trees, expertly use long poles to skillfully knock down the ripe coconuts, which land with a soft thud on the earthen ground below. Two French explorers, dressed in European attire, are depicted observing the scene with keen interest. One explorer is seen sitting on a large boulder, while the other stands nearby, gesturing towards the men below. A cow, perhaps belonging to the explorers, is tethered nearby, grazing contentedly in the lush vegetation. The village itself is a charming collection of bamboo and palm huts, arranged in a semi-circle around a communal area. Smoke rises from the thatched roofs, indicating the presence of cooking fires. The overall effect is one of harmony and simplicity, as the people of the village go about their daily tasks, oblivious to the outside world. This enchanting illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people of Timor during the 19th century, offering a unique and captivating window into a time long past.
