EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we witness a remarkable tale of transformation and reconciliation in the Central Chen-Si region of China during the 1920s. The top left section of the image showcases the enigmatic figure of the Revolutionary leader, dressed in the uniform of a slain British general. With an estimated 10,000 followers, this charismatic figure had led a rebellion that infested the Central Chen-Si region. The top right corner of the photograph introduces us to S. Eugenio Massi (1875-1944), the Apostolic Vicar of Central Chen-Si, China, and a Missionary of the Society of the Divine Child Jesus (G.F.C.I.). Massi's unwavering dedication to his faith and his people led him to successfully pacify the revolutionaries. The lower section of the photograph reveals the six wives of the Revolutionary leader, who were among the many souls saved by Eugenio Massi's preaching. This photograph is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the resilience of the human spirit. Eugenio Massi's missionary work was not without peril. Tragically, he was killed during the bombing of Hankow (Hankou) in 1944. This photograph, taken around 1920, provides a glimpse into a fascinating moment in history, where the power of faith and the human capacity for change intersected in the heart of China.
