EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Theatre Royal, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England: A Historic Theatre and the Forgotten Memorial to Samuel Morley This photograph, taken circa 1903, showcases the grand exterior of the Theatre Royal in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England. The theatre, adorned with its impressive Corinthian columns and colonnade, is a classic example of architectural elegance from the early 1900s. The Theatre Royal has been a significant part of Nottingham's cultural landscape for over two centuries, offering a diverse range of entertainment to the local community and beyond. However, there is a lesser-known story connected to this iconic building. In the foreground of the image, a statue of Samuel Morley stands proudly. Morley was an English woollen manufacturer, political radical, Member of Parliament (MP), abolitionist, and campaigner for workers' rights. The statue was produced after his death in 1888 by James Harvard Thomas. Morley's memorial was intended to be placed in the Arboretum, a public park in Nottingham. Unfortunately, the memorial was deemed a traffic obstruction in 1927 and was broken during its transportation. Samuel Morley's legacy as a political and social reformer is an essential part of Nottingham's history. He was a prominent figure in the Chartist movement, advocating for workers' rights and universal suffrage. Morley's commitment to abolitionism led him to play a crucial role in the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire. His unwavering dedication to social justice and equality continues to inspire generations. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of Nottingham and the enduring legacy of Samuel Morley, a man who left a lasting impact on the city and the world.
