EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print, titled "Ephemeris expeditionis Norreysii & Draki in Lusitaniam," documents the English Armada led by Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Norris against the Spanish-Portuguese ports in 1589. The expedition, also known as the "Norris and Drake's Expedition," was a significant event during the Anglo-Spanish War, a conflict between England and Spain under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and King Philip II. The print, published in London by Thomas Woodcoke in 1589, provides an account of the expedition and is a valuable primary source for understanding the military strategies and naval warfare of the late 16th century. The Latin title translates to "The Almanac of the Expedition of Norreys and Draken in Lusitania," reflecting the importance of accurate navigation and planning in the success of the mission. The English Armada, which included the famous vessel "Dragon," under the command of Sir Francis Drake, targeted Spanish and Portuguese ports in the Iberian Peninsula, including Corunna in Galicia, Spain. The expedition was a response to Spanish threats against English shipping and commercial interests in Europe and the Americas. One of the most notable events of the expedition was the heroic defense of Corunna by Maria Pita, a local woman who rallied the townspeople to repel the English attack. Her bravery and determination are celebrated in Spanish history, and her legacy continues to inspire pride in the region. This facsimile of the original print is now held in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and is a testament to the enduring historical significance of the Anglo-Spanish War and the naval exploits of Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Norris.
