EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment James and Mabel Fenwick set foot on the rescue ship, Carpathia, following the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912. The negative image, part of the Fenwick Archive, measures 5.5 x 3.5 inches and was taken on the deck of the Carpathia as the couple, dressed in their finest white attire, gazed out at the vast, star-studded ocean. The Titanic, a symbol of luxury and opulence, had been their honeymoon destination, and the sudden turn of events left them, like so many others, stranded and in shock. Yet, in this image, they stand together, their expressions a mix of relief and determination, as they prepare to embark on the long journey home. The Carpathia, a white ship with a distinctive black line, looms in the background, a beacon of hope and safety amidst the chaos of the sea. The ocean, calm and tranquil, stretches out before them, dotted with stars that twinkle brightly in the night sky. This photograph, taken in the early 1910s, is a poignant reminder of the transportative power of ships and the importance of human connection, even in the face of adversity. The Fenwick Archive, home to this negative, preserves this moment in history, allowing us to witness the resilience and strength of the human spirit.
