EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative postcard captures the poignant moment of the Menin Gate's unveiling and dedication in Ypres, Belgium, on July 24, 1927. The Menin Gate, a war memorial dedicated to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the First World War, was unveiled and dedicated by Field-Marshal Lord Plumer. The archway, adorned with the names of over 54,000 soldiers who have no known grave, stands as a testament to the sacrifices made during the war. The crowd gathered in the 1920s square, dressed in their Sunday best, pays their respects to the fallen soldiers. The Menin Gate, a symbol of hope and remembrance, has been the site of the Last Post Ceremony since 1928, held every evening at 8 pm, honoring the memory of the fallen soldiers. This poignant moment in history is beautifully preserved in this postcard from The John Barrett Collection, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War.
