EDITORS COMMENTS
["Caption: This Apprenticeship Indenture, dated 25th June 1901, marks the beginning of John Henry Watson's five-year journey towards becoming an instrument maker. At the age of seventeen, Watson signed this legal agreement with Messrs John Davis & Son (Derby) Limited, binding himself to obedience and good behaviour in exchange for training and wages. The document, signed by Watson himself, his father Walter Watson, and Henry Davis, Governing Director, outlines the terms of employment. The apprentice's weekly pay started at 4 shillings and sixpence in the first year, gradually increasing to 12 shillings and sixpence in the fifth year. Watson agreed to be obedient, not do any damage, and not to take leave of absence without consent. He also pledged not to play cards, dice, or other unlawful games, nor to frequent taverns or playhouses. This official document, from the Edwardian era, is a testament to the binding nature of apprenticeships during this period. The apprentice's commitment to the company and the industry was essential for the transfer of skills and knowledge from one generation to the next. The indenture, preserved by Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past, revealing the legal and financial obligations of both the apprentice and the employer during the early 20th century. Messrs John Davis & Son (Derby) Limited, a prominent company during this time, played a significant role in Watson's apprenticeship and career development. The managing and governing directors, Henry Davis, entrusted Watson with the skills and knowledge necessary to become a successful instrument maker. This document, signed on the 3rd of January 1902, represents a crucial step in Watson's journey towards a fulfilling career in the industry."]
