EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor drawing depicts the Oriental Turtle Dove, Streptopelia orientalis, which is number 9 in a collection of 61 avian illustrations from the Himalaya Mountains. The artwork is part of the extensive collection amassed by Lady Mary Bentinck during her time in India in the early 19th century. The date of creation for this particular piece is recorded as 1833. Lady Mary Bentinck (1800-1851), an Englishwoman of noble descent, was the wife of the then Governor-General of India, Lord William Cavendish-Bentinck. She was an accomplished naturalist and an avid collector of natural history specimens, including birds. Her passion for the natural world led her to commission a team of skilled local artists to create these detailed watercolor drawings of the diverse avian species found in the Himalayas. The Oriental Turtle Dove is a resident bird in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It belongs to the Columbidae family, which includes pigeons and doves. This bird is easily recognizable by its distinctive black spots on its wings and the pinkish-brown coloration on its body. The Oriental Turtle Dove is known for its cooing call, which is a common sound in the forests and open woodlands of its habitat. This watercolor drawing showcases the intricate details of the Oriental Turtle Dove's plumage and anatomy, with particular attention paid to the delicate wing structure and the subtle variations in coloration. The artist's skillful use of watercolor techniques brings the bird to life, capturing its essence and beauty in a timeless and captivating way. The Library & Archives holds this precious collection of watercolor drawings, which provides a valuable record of the avian species of the Himalayas during the early 19th century. This collection is a testament to Lady Mary Bentinck's dedication to natural history and her role as a patron of the arts in India.
