EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the stern and resolute visage of Patrick Ruthven, 1st Earl of Forth and Brentford (1573-1651). A prominent Scottish soldier and nobleman, Ruthven played a significant role in the tumultuous political landscape of 17th century Scotland, most notably as a leader in the Royalist cause during the Bishops' Wars. Born into the Ruthven family, an ancient Scottish clan, Patrick Ruthven rose to prominence in the Scottish court under King James VI. However, his fortunes took a turn when he was implicated in the kidnapping of the king's mother, Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1567. Despite this setback, Ruthven continued to serve the Scottish crown, eventually becoming the Earl of Forth and Brentford in 1600. Ruthven's loyalty to the Scottish monarchy was tested during the Bishops' Wars, a series of conflicts between Scotland and England over the English attempt to impose English bishops on the Scottish church. Ruthven, a devout Calvinist, led the Scottish forces in the Battle of Newburn in 1639, which resulted in a decisive Scottish victory. Despite his military successes, Ruthven's political fortunes continued to fluctuate. He was eventually exiled from Scotland in 1641, but returned in 1648 to support the Royalist cause during the Scottish Civil War. Ruthven was killed in battle at the Battle of Inverkeithing in 1651, marking the end of an era for this complex and influential Scottish nobleman. This print, produced in an unknown year, offers a glimpse into the past, capturing the intense gaze and unwavering resolve of a man who played a pivotal role in the political and military history of Scotland.
