EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1881, offers a glimpse into the rich history of pearl fishing in the Persian Gulf. The image features a Sidi-Arab diver, dressed in traditional attire and wearing a distinctive pince-nez glasses, preparing to descend into the crystal-clear waters. The Mosquito Fleet, a collection of small boats, is anchored in the background, providing a home base for the divers and their equipment. The divers, who were primarily from the Arabian Peninsula, were renowned for their expertise in pearl diving. They would free-dive to depths of up to 20 meters, using simple breathing techniques and holding their breath for several minutes at a time. The pearls were found within the shells of oysters, which the divers carefully pried open with a small tool. The apparatus used by the divers is also visible in the photograph. The air bell, a large, inflated balloon, provided the diver with a small pocket of air to breathe from while underwater. The weight belt, made of heavy stones, was worn around the waist to help the diver descend and stay submerged. The diver's mask, a simple leather cover, protected his eyes and nose from the water. This photograph captures a moment in time from the 1880s, when pearl fishing in the Persian Gulf was a thriving industry. The pearls were highly sought after for their beauty and rarity, and were traded extensively throughout the Middle East, Europe, and beyond. The pearl fishing industry played a significant role in the economy of the region, and continues to be an important part of its cultural heritage today.
