EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Falco peregrinus, Peregrine Falcon, and Falco rusticolus, Gyrfalcon," is an exquisite illustration from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology. Published in Paris, France, between 1816 and 1830, this work was a significant contribution to the scientific community during the era of natural history exploration. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) and the Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) are depicted in this image. The Peregrine Falcon, with its distinctive black head and white underparts, is the fastest bird in the world, reaching speeds over 240 miles per hour during its hunting stoop. The Gyrfalcon, the largest of the falcon species, is known for its striking white plumage, making it a popular target for hunters in the Arctic regions. The intricate details of the feathers, beaks, and eyes of these birds are beautifully rendered in this meticulously handcolored engraving. The background, adorned with various plants and rocks, adds to the overall naturalistic effect. The engraving was expertly executed by David, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. This historical illustration is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the naturalists, painters, and engravers of the time, who meticulously documented the natural world for future generations to study and appreciate.
