EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in the annals of British theatre history as His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, greets the esteemed architect Elisabeth Scott at the opening of the New Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on 23rd April 1932. The New Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, a magnificent architectural masterpiece, was designed by Scott to replace the old, dilapidated theatre that had stood since 1882. The Prince of Wales, later known as King Edward VIII, is seen in formal attire, wearing a top hat and holding a cane, while Elisabeth Scott, dressed elegantly in a long coat and hat, extends her hand in a warm welcome. The New Shakespeare Memorial Theatre marked a new era for the Royal Shakespeare Company, which had been founded in 1879 to perform the works of the Bard of Avon in his birthplace. The opening of the theatre was a grand occasion, attended by many dignitaries and theatre enthusiasts, and marked the beginning of a new chapter in the rich history of Shakespearean theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.
