EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the regal elegance and poised presence of Queen Mary II of England (1662-1694), the beloved monarch who ruled jointly with her husband, William III, from 1689 until her untimely death in 1694. Daughter of the deposed King James II, Mary was a key figure in the Glorious Revolution, which brought about the end of the Stuart dynasty and the establishment of a new era in English history. Born on December 30, 1662, in St. James's Palace, Mary was the elder daughter of James, Duke of York, and Anne Hyde. Her childhood was marked by political instability and religious strife, as her father's Catholicism and his attempts to secure the throne for his heir, James, Duke of Monmouth, sparked opposition from Protestant forces. When her father was deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, Mary and her husband, William of Orange, were invited to take the throne. They were crowned joint monarchs on February 11, 1689, and their reign marked a period of relative stability and prosperity for England. Mary was known for her intelligence, her piety, and her devotion to her husband and her people. She was also a patron of the arts and sciences, and her court was graced by the presence of many distinguished figures of the day. Tragically, Mary's reign was cut short by her death on December 28, 1694, at the age of just 31. She was buried in Westminster Abbey, and her passing marked the end of the House of Stuart and the beginning of the House of Hanover. This portrait, which captures the essence of Mary's regal beauty and her unwavering strength, serves as a fitting tribute to a queen who played a pivotal role in shaping the course of English history.
