The children, who had been evacuated from war-torn Europe to the United States as part of the Kindertransport program, are seen here waving goodbye to their temporary caregivers and the bustling city that had served as their refuge. The Kindertransport was a remarkable humanitarian effort that began in December 1938, just weeks before the outbreak of World War II. With the situation in Europe growing increasingly dire, British Jewish organizations and the British government worked together to arrange for the evacuation of thousands of children, primarily Jewish, from Nazi Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia, to the safety of Great Britain and other countries, including the United States.
